The Hubble Space Telescope captures this inspiring image of a massive galaxy cluster named Abell 1351 with its Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Camera for Survey. Abell 1531 is located more than 4 billion light-years away and lies within the northern constellation, Ursa Major. The image is filled with light streaks that are actual images of faraway galaxies. The streaks themselves are formed by gravitational lensing, which is a space phenomenon that occurs when a massive object in space like a galaxy cluster distorts spacetime strong enough to affect the straight lines of light moving through it as if the light itself is moving through a giant magnifying glass.
Gravitational lensing is often classified in two ways- strong and weak-and both types can help astronomers determine the distribution of mass in galaxy clusters such as Abell 1351 shown in the above image. This new image is part of a collection that holds capture of some of the most massive known galaxy clusters. This menagerie of massive galaxy clusters shows powerful space phenomena like gravitational lensing and examples of intense galaxy evolution. Astronomers proposed a Snapshot Program to obtain this astronomical album. Snapshot Programs are lists of separate short exposures that are divided into spaces between longer Hubble Observations.
