One of NASA’s Webb’s four main scientific instruments, specifically the Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph instrument (NIRISS) is now ready to perform science. According to NASA, the last mode of the NIRISS to be completed before the instrument was confirmed ready to start its scientific operations was the Single Object Slitless Spectroscopy (SOSS) capability. The middle of the SOSS mode is a specialized prism assembly that separates the light of a cosmic object to create three different spectra, displaying over 2,000 infrared colors collected in one observation. SOSS mode will specialize in studying the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets. By comparing the spectra during, before, and after a planet’s transit around its host star, astronomers can identify not only whether or not the exoplanet contains an atmosphere, but also the atoms and molecules inside the atmosphere as well.
Rene Doyon, principal investigator for NIRISS, as well as Webb’s Fine Guidance sensor at the University of Montreal stated” I’m so excited and thrilled to think that we’ve finally reached the end of this two-decade-long journey of Canada’s contribution to the mission. All four NIRISS modes are not only ready, but the instrument as a whole is performing significantly better than we predicted. I am pinching myself at the thought that we are just days away from the start of science operations, and in particular from NIRISS probing its first exoplanet atmospheres.”
With the addition that the NIRISS postlaunch commissioning activities concluded, the Webb team will insist on marking off five remaining modes on Webb’s other scientific instruments that need approval. NASA’s Webb’s first full-colored images and spectroscopic data will be released to the public on July 12, 2022.
